At 5:47 PM on May 12th, 2008, the Large Hadron Collider commenced operation. I had just sat down for dinner, another generic, supermarket brand 5-minute TV dinner you can get for two dollars. All the networks were covering the story, but no cameras were allowed inside the building. They did send out one of their head scientists to make talk with the press, however, as a smug and confident look ran across his face. What a fool. Sure, he didn't know it then, but this would be the end of the world as we knew it. No sooner had the machine started up did the cameras suddenly shut off. One minute of silence. Finally, the network returns to an obviously frightened and flustered anchorman, who told our country the news as he received it. The combination of a large amount of particles accelerating towards Earth after escaping a Lenticular Galaxy collapsing and the small black holes generated by the Large Hadron Collider tore a hole in the very fabric of space. Over 100 wormholes popped up across the globe in an instant. Those holes, over the course of a single hour, engulfed every man, woman and child, sending them even God knows not where. But where I ended up... is still beyond my own belief. A new world, a new dimension, with nothing but the clothes on my back.

This was how I found Gensokyo, a world not entirely unlike our own, yet completely different at the same time. But truth to be told… compared to the events in the following days, it was almost forgettable.

I awoke to what seemed like utter darkness. I moved my right arm, and felt the large leaves resting on my head and upper torso, and removed them. I found myself in a wooded area, but the trees didn’t seem like anything I had ever seen before. As I stood up, I found that I had no noticeable injuries, save a small cut on my left hand as I held on to the floor of my house when I was sucked into the abyss. No sooner had I glanced up did I meet eyes with a young woman. She wore some of the strangest attire I had ever seen; a large pink and purple dress, and a pink poofy hat with a thin red ribbon tied in the front and carried a frilled umbrella. Before I could even assess the situation, she yelled to me “Who… who are you? A human? I don’t remember bringing any humans over for quite a while… how the hell did you get here?” I was prepared to answer, but then something struck me. Human. She called me a human. Which would imply she wasn’t one, or it was a rarity here. As I sweated, I couldn’t muster a word before she cut in “Ah, it really doesn’t matter, maybe you just wandered away from the village. It’s time for my nap, anyways.” With that, she raised an umbrella, and opened a pocket in space itself- a border. I’d never felt my heart beat that fast before. As she leaned in, she smiled back to me, and said in an almost flirty voice “Try not to get eaten out here, okay, human?” Without even thinking, the words just came out of me “E…eaten?”, but she has already gone and closed the border. I don’t remember what happened after that, but it’s safe to assume I blacked out from sheer terror.

I rose in what seem like the same spot as before. It was morning, and I could hear some sort of birds chirping. This time, however, I was determined to figure out exactly what was going on, and where I was. I looked up at the sky, and could see what seemed like smoke to the east. Maybe it was nothing, an act of nature, but maybe it was someone else out here, and they might have a few answers. I set off in that direction at a steady pace, pushing the strange, thorned brush aside. I walked for what seemed like an hour, but steadily it seemed like the smoke was getting closer. Just then, something flew by me at an incredible speed. It was the size of a human, but I couldn’t get a good glimpse of exactly what it was. Just as I turned in that direction, I was slammed into from behind by a heavy force. I had gotten hit by a car once before, but this- this felt twice as powerful, yet… I was again completely unharmed as I rose to my feet. I turned around to see what had hit me, a girl with a blue dress and a green bow with wings suspended behind her. She was rubbing her head, it seemed like she got the worst of the collision. I muttered “Excuse me…” but I was immediately cut off by a loud yell, followed by her saying in a furious voice “HEY! YOU BIG JERK! What the hell are you doing getting in my way like that!?” I immediately apologized, but it seemed like when she looked at me again, her tone changed drastically. “You’re a human, right? And a guy too. But I’m surprised, you don’t even seem hurt from that hit. I was chasing Letty around as fast as I could; she broke all the icicles I was making again, and that made me really mad. But really, you should be dead, unless… are you friends with Reimu? Or Marisa?” I answered no, I’d only been here for 2 days, and she seemed even more surprised. She continued “2 days in the forest of magic, or… 2 days in Gensokyo?” Gensokyo. That was what this place was called.

Both girls looked at me in amazement; apparently, few humans are capable of flight, even in this magical land. It was now I realized that trip here had changed me… or perhaps, I had not changed at all, simply the laws of physics had been skewed on this plane. But this was no time for thoughts on physics, I was still in danger of dying right here, by the hands of some ridiculously powerful creature. But before she could launch another attack, the fairy girl cried out to her “Hey, Letty, cut it out! Why are you attacking him? Do you want the Miko after us again?” Letty replied “But Cirno, I heard you yelling, wasn’t this guy attacking you?” She replied, almost smugly “Hah! Attacking me? Who would be stupid enough to do that? I am the strongest!” They both smiled, but I still had next to no clue what was going on, only that I was floating and some weird girl just tried to kill me. The sun was high in the sky.

With only the will of my thoughts, I managed to land back on the ground. Cirno and Letty had calmed down, so I thought I’d try actually introducing myself. I told them where I used to live, and what my world was like, but they still didn’t understand how I gained this innate power by simply flying through a “border” as they referred to it. Neither did I, for that matter. They explained that today was the last day of winter, and Letty had to leave soon, or she might melt. So we said goodbye, and they flew off to what I now know are the lakes near the Scarlet Devil Mansion. But now I needed some place to sleep, and it was getting reasonably late. I was afraid of testing my luck by flying, so I continued towards the smoke in the same manner as before. Finally, I could see the source of the smoke- a relatively small house with a chimney. I was disappointed it was only a single house, but I guess asking whoever lives there a few questions wouldn’t hurt… hopefully. I approached the house and knocked on the door three times. Yet another young woman answered, in a white and pink top leading to a blue dress, and holding an old looking book. “Um… hello, who are you?” she said. She seemed nice enough, so I told her my name and why I was there. She told me her name was Alice, but hesitated for a second. She asked me a question I had heard quite a bit ever since I came here. She asked if I was human. I told her yes, but this time, I felt inclined to ask exactly why everyone is so surprised I’m human, since she was out here too. She replied “Well… I’m not human.
